TODO the art of Sunset Park

Sunset Park is changing. With all the development and the influx of new residents, many of which are artists, Sunset is quickly developing a reputation as the new art scene in New York City. The goal of this event is to help promote an understanding of arts and all the contributions it has to offer the community. NURTUREart educational outreach program, Sarah Hervert (MS 136, A.P.) and myself believe it is important to encourage community collaboration in school and outside in order to help our students become active participants in Sunset’s development.

Come out, support local artist, view amazing art work from our students and enjoy.

"We Are Here" MS 136 Community Mural

MS 136: We Are Here: Project Goals
Our goals for this project are based on the idea of connecting students to their community through a focus on public art and the building of language to communicate their personal reflections. Artistically, the students will work together to make a collaborative mural on the side of their school, engaging team building skills and communication. They will learn the process of creating a public work of art from brainstorming to organization, from process to finalization.

The students will be building work for their English Language Arts Portfolio as they write poetry and develop a spoken word performance centered around a greater understanding of their community gained through the mural painting. They will be encouraged to communicate about this place they call home in a poetic and creative way.

Glazer: Nurture Art Session at MS 136 and Studio Visit

NURTUREart's Education Outreach Program enters its fifth year of introducing area high school students to art at its source: the artist. The program was initiated in 2005 with Williamsburg's Juan Morel Campos Secondary School to bring students in contact with NURTUREart Registry Artists. In its third year, NURTUREart collaborated with Pratt Institute to enroll students in a portfolio development course to assist students who intended to continue their arts education at the college level.
